Accessibility
Both of our self-catering cottages were converted with the needs of visitors with physical disabilities in mind. During the 15 years since we opened we have welcomed many visitors, children and adults, with a range of disabilities, including those with a visual impairment, learning difficulties and residents from residential homes and schools.
Our cottages were inspected and graded by Tourism for All (previously Holiday Care) using the National Accessible Standard.
They are graded M2 which means they are "suitable for a person with restricted walking ability and for those that may need to use a wheel chair some of the time".
All doorways are wide enough to allow wheelchair access. There is level access from the parking area at the front door and at the back door to the patio and garden. All power points and light switches are at waist height. Between the ground and first floor there is a Stannah stair lift and space for a lateral transfer from a wheelchair. Downstairs there are no internal doors except to the shower room, and no steps.
The downstairs shower room has an integral shower (no step up or down), which can be used by holding a vertical grab rail or by sitting on an adjustable seat. There is a horizontal grab rail by the toilet. The washbasin is at wheelchair height.
In the kitchen some of the worktops and shelves, and the sink are at wheelchair height.
Upstairs the double bedroom though small is wheelchair accessible, the twin bedded room is accessible and more spacious. Access to the gallery is steep and not recommended for those with limited mobility. In the bathroom there is space for a lateral transfer using the grab rail by the toilet and the washbasin is accessible for a wheelchair user. There is space for sitting at the end of the bath to transfer into it using a horizontal grab rail above the bath.
We have a small store of equipment which we can lend visitors: a wheelchair for upstairs use, commode, non-slip bath mat, bath seat and bath board. Sue worked as a social worker in local hospitals for many years specialising in work with older adults and those with physical disabilities, and would be happy to discuss individual needs.
