Cycling

Devon is supreme cycling country and here at Clifford Barton we all love to get out on our bikes. Whether it’s an epic over the open roads of the ‘moor, or an hour’s high adrenalin off-roading in the local forests, there’s no better way to explore and enjoy the area.

There are no shortage of hills in Devon, and the Teign valley is no exception – indeed it’s renowned for its hills – so if you get your cycling kicks from endurance hill climbing and dramatic descents then this is definitely the place for you.

But don’t worry if you’re not so keen on hill climbing. By sticking to the trails that follow the river up or downstream from Clifford Bridge you can enjoy an abundance of easygoing cycling. The gently rolling track to Fingle Bridge (c.2.5 miles) offers an easy gravelled surface perfect for beginners.

We have a pool of mountain and hybrid bikes that our guests are welcome to use, free of charge. If you don’t have a bike or don’t want the hassle of transporting it here, they offer the opportunity for guests to get out and explore the scenic Teign valley trails on 2 wheels – even if it’s just a 20 minute cycle up the River Teign to the Fingle Bridge Inn.

We have a range of bikes to suit all ages, including children. Our pool bikes have limits though – none have full suspension – so if you’re a hardcore enduro rider you’ll probably want to bring your own steed.

We don’t provide cycling helmets, so please make sure you bring your own.

We’re very happy to advise on both road and off-road circuits from our house to suit your ambition, interests and fitness level. For inspiration you may want to take a look at the following links.

Evolve Mountain Biking

We’ve also teemed up with local expert cycling coach and guide, Tony Williams. Tony set up EvolveMTB with the intent ‘to get as many people as possible, no matter their age, ability or experience, out onto bikes and discovering the great county that is Devon’.

Tony knows Dartmoor and the Teign Valley intimately and offers guided rides to suit your experience and interests. He charges £100 for a 1/2 day guided tour for groups of up to 8. He also offers mountain biking skills sessions, from beginners to advanced, for individuals or groups. Tony has a pool of more advanced mountain bikes, so to enjoy an afternoon’s mountain biking on Dartmoor you don’t even need to bring your own bike.
