Stylish, cosy and comfortable, curl up in front of the wood burning stove or lounge in the south-facing private garden following a walk on the moor.

Mardon Cottage

Mardon and its mirror image sister Butterdon were converted from stone barns, and comprehensively renovated in 2015. They now each provide stylish self catering accommodation for 5 people. Great care has been taken to provide all mod cons needed for a perfect holiday, whilst retaining the historical features and unique feel of the original barn. Our guests regularly tell us that they love the attention to detail, with all soft furnishings being hand made, soft ambient lighting and a glowing woodburning stove, creating a mood in which you can truly relax.

The woodburning stove in Mardon's living area gives it a very cosy feel, although the cottage has a great central heating system so is always toasty whether the woodburner is lit or not (all firewood is included). There is a comfy 2 seater and 3 seater sofa, a TV and DVD player with a range of DVDs. Alternatively you could gather the group around the table to play one of the board games or  jigsaws, or connect your music to the bluetooth speaker and watch the diversity of bird life which comes to the feeder at the window from the comfort of the sofa. A supply of top up bird food is kept in the kitchen.

Cook up a feast in the well equipped kitchen whilst chatting to friends, it’s a great sociable space. Then gather the whole group together around the large table for meals – games – or just to enjoy the views!

For those balmy evenings when you fancy dining alfresco there in a BBQ/fire pit on the patio area with large table and chairs. Watch the sun go down in comfy recliners, the fire pit for warmth if the night becomes a bit chilly and wait for sky to light up with twinkling stars.

Mardon sleeps five guests in two individually styled bedrooms. The double room has a super comfy pocket sprung mattress. The triple room has one double bed and one single bed, again both with pocket sprung mattresses. The triple bedroom is open to the eaves and has a mezzanine level play area with toys and books that younger guests really enjoy (there is a stair gate at the bottom). Both bedrooms have bespoke hand made furnishings with immaculate crisp white linen, soft lighting, everything you need for a restful nights sleep after a long walk on the moor.

There is a modern shower room on the ground floor and a great family bathroom with deep bath on the first floor. Each of the bathrooms has a centrally heated towel rail and oodles of hot water - perfect for unwinding after a day's exploration. Other more invigorating bathing options are available, in the River Teign a short walk away.

Outdoor Space

Our guests repeatedly tell us they love the outdoor space at Clifford Barton. There is lots of room around the properties to roam and a safe space for children to play. There is a large grassy area, framed by the three cottages and the games room. This is the perfect area to meet other guests to swap ideas of activities and destinations. And for children to make friends and plan adventures. It has hosted gymnastic competitions, herb soup stalls, roly-poly competitions, and mud hedgehog production.

Chidren (and adults) love the long winding drive, perfect for scootering, skateboarding and biking - which can all be borrowed from our bike pool. There are 50 acres of woodland, grassland and lake to explore. Our new letterboxing activity helps you to explore.

A track wends it way through the old farmyard to the lake (approx. ½ km wander). There is a picnic bench at the lake so another great location to enjoy the location and watch the swallows and swifts feed over the lake or catch the vivid colours of the kingfisher flash by. The track is also a favoured feeding location for the badger and in the spring if your lucky you might see cubs playing in the dusk light.

Mardon has a pretty garden, a great space to sit in one of the comfy loungers with a cup of tea or glass of wine and grab some time out.  It is fenced so small children and four legged friends can be contained. There is very little light pollution in the Teign Valley and so it is the perfect location to marvel at the starry sky.

"We had a magical visit to this special place. The welcome was warm, the cottage cosy, beautifully decorated and the area really stunning. It was wonderful to have use of the bikes and we enjoyed a lovely cycle along the river to the local pub. Our boys loved the games barn and we loved the lake. We are already trying to work out when we can come back!"  Sarah, Dorset
